The Mead edged into the Second Round of the Velocity Trophy with in the end what was a narrow win over Phoenix Sports.
Two more goals from Alex Tenolia - his 9th and 10th of the season - and first goals for the club from Ryan Flack and Simon Glover had given the Mead a 4-1 lead, before two late goals for the visitors made the closing minutes a lot tighter than they really should have been given the lead that the Mead had built up.
After a reasonably opening quarter hour, the Mead took the lead on 16 minutes when Alex fired home his first of the night. Phoenix responded almost immediately and took advantage of defensive lapse to level six minutes later.
Alex's second of the night on the half hour restored the Mead's lead before Ryan's low drive eight minutes from half time into he bottom corner extended the advantage.
It was an advantage that would be extended ten minutes after the break when Simon netted from a corner and for fifteen minutes the Mead were coasting.
Phoenix though never gave up and when they scored their second with nineteen minutes left, the Mead hoped that it would be just a consolation. But when the visitors netted a third with eight minutes left, the home side were left anxiously looking at their watches as the time ticked by.
