Trophy jinx strikes again!

8 months ago By MIKE GREEN

The Mead 0-1 Metropolitan Police

And so another FA Trophy campaign comes to an end without the Mead still not getting past the Third Qualifying Round.

But the result of this contest will only tell half the story as the Police side arrived second in the BOSTIK Premier Division winning nine of their previous twelve matches and with just one reverse since opening day. With all that in opposition there was nothing between the two sides almost for the whole ninety minutes - both forward lines were busy; both midfielders were probing and both defences were outstanding - and it was clear that one mistake could prove the difference and sadly it was the Mead who made it - at the start of the second half - when Mummery fed in Macklin to score the games only goal.

It was tough on the Mead, but another step on the learning curve of this side and with some real challenging League games ahead in the coming weeks, there are some intriguing times ahead at Princes. But sadly it wont for this season include another FA Trophy tie...

Real chances were at a premium throughout what became a fascinating contest with the clearest in the first half falling to Police defender Robinson who shot across the face of the Mead goal after the ball ricocheted to him in the six-yard box before Danny Parrish raced onto a long clearance from Lewis Carey and picked out the late arriving Tom O'Connor into the box. Sadly for Tom, his side footed effort was superbly turned aside by Police keeper Williams and the chance was gone. Ellis Green was then unfortunate to see an angled pile driver flick off of the top of the head of a defender and flash behind for a corner.

The second half began with the decisive moment of the game - the Mead defence didn't clear and Mummery had the time to roll the ball into the path of Macklin who drilled the ball past Lewis and into the net.

Despite the constant prodding and probings of Tom in the middle of the park, the home side just couldn't find a way through. Not even the introduction of Raphael Duyile or new signing Richard Pacquette was able to alter the result and so its the Police side who take their place in the Third Qualifying Round draw on Monday morning, whilst the Mead look forward to the derby with Phoenix Sports at Princes on Wednesday night and will look to get back to winning ways against their local rivals.

THE MEAD - Carey, Denny, McIntyre, Anidugbe, Smith, Avery, Green (Duyile), O'Connor, Vines (Pacquette), Parrish, Mendy
Subs - Kinch and Ovenden
