Five Star "International"

The Mead 5-0 Guernsey

This was the Mead’s first win of 2018 – a five goal “international” romp and the third time this season Tommy Warrilow’s side have hit five in a home League game at Princes Park – the question now could it prove to be the springboard for a Play Off charge between now and April?

Two strikes from Laurent Mendy, backed up with headers from Scott Kinch and Joe Denny and Paul Vines’ 14th goal of the season sealed the points, but it was the performance of young Guernsey keeper Stanton which was the star role on a crisp Princes Park night. The youngster on loan from Premier League AFC Bournemouth was simply outstanding and poor Danny Parish in particular will be delighted if the two never cross swords again!

For the visiting Green Lions, its been a worrying recent slump in form as they slipped to their eighth game without out a win – the last four without a goal conceding fifteen without reply

The Mead flew out of the blocks with plenty of early pressure, with Bode Anidugbe finding himself free in the right channel only to shot wide and the unlucky Richard Pacquette firing wide from twenty yards before being replaced by Vinesy barely 15 minutes into the game. Indeed, one of Pacq’s final contribution was to cross for Laurent to curl a cracked into the corner of the net.

Stanton held low shots across goal from both Danny and Jack McIntyre before Danny again went close as he raced clear. Finally, the Mead did double their lead after a poor pass saw the home side break and after the keeper denied Danny and Bode the ball eventually fell to Vinesy who made no mistake. The Mead’s top scorer was then denied a second for himself as Stanton turned aside a sensational flick, but the Mead weren’t to be denied as Kinchy headed home his fifth of the season three minutes from half time.

As the game passed the hour, the result was already pretty much done and dusted, but the Mead made completely sure on 63 minutes. A corner dropped to Laurent on the edge of the area and his shot took a deflection as it flew past a helpless Stanton.

The siege continued as Bode headed wide; Vinesy shot wide and Laurent was inches away from a hat-trick as his low drive flashed inches wide. It was then Tom O’Connor’s “turn” to be denied by Stanton who then denied Danny yet again before reacting remarkably quickly to deny Tom’s rampaging run.

Just as the Mead thought that the fifth wouldn’t come, Joe flung himself at a cross and his diving header nestled into the corner of the Guernsey net to secure the Mead’s first three points of 2018 and with Hastings United due at Princes on Saturday, the Gaffer will be hoping the second win of the year doesn’t take as long as the 17 days for the first.

THE MEAD – Carey, Brand, Danquah (Taiwo), Kinch (Green), Denny, McIntyre, Anidugbe, O’Connor, Parish, Pacquette (Vines), Mendy
Subs – Adelowo & Ovenden
