Mead's Five Star Derby Win

The Mead 5-2 Phoenix Sports

The Mead finally downed the Phoenix for another season and secured a hat-trick of wins over our neighbours after an incredible start that led to a five-star display across the pitch.

A pulsating start saw the home side race into a three-goal lead in the first dozen minutes courtesy of Danny Parish’s screamer, Tom O’Connor’s fine drive and Laurent Mendy’s far post header. From then on, it was a question of how many the rampant Mead would get especially after they recovered from the visitors pulling one back in the first half – Richard Pacquette’s first goal in Mead colours twenty minutes after the break settled any nerves that may have been festering before Danny was on hand to ram home his second after Bode Anidugbe’s shot had come crashing back from the post.

Not even a late second for the visitors – another rebound after Lewis Carey had saved another penalty – could take the gloss off what was a stunning win which took the Mead into the top ten of the table for the first time since the end of August.

It really was a dream start for the home side and incredibly it could have been even better as Jake McIntyre whistled in a free kick that was inches wide with Sports keeper Phillips motionless. The home side took the lead on six minutes when Danny gloriously drilled home his first for the club, and within 90 seconds it was two as the shell-shocked Phillips produced a fine save to deny Laurent before Laurent and Bode combined in a special corner routine and Tom was on hand to drive a shot into the corner of the net. Two soon became three when Laurent was on hand at the back post unmarked to score after only twelve minutes. And it’s ridiculous to say that the Mead could and perhaps should have been even further in front as both Laurent and Bode pulled shots wide when well placed – all within the first quarter of the contest!
The Mead then received a wake-up call when Probets curled a free-kick into the net just before the half hour, but the home side responded well as Laurent’s flick from Jake’s corner landed on top of the net after the same player just could reach Richard’s teasing ball into the box that also fractionally eluded a sliding Tom as well.

The second half was never going to match the first for the entertainment value, but it came close as the Mead weathered a period of Phoenix possession before finally sealing the win once and for all. On 65 minutes, Richard got the goal that his first full Mead appearance deserved as he was on the end of a terrific move down the right before Danny helped himself to a second in the closing stages – Bode was desperately unlucky not to get on the scoresheet with a shot (after a great run) came back off Phillips’ left post, but Danny was on hand to knock in his second and seal the Mead’s Five Star win.

Not even a last-minute header from Duah Kessie – after Lewis had made his third penalty save of the season which was given after Richard Avery couldn’t get out of the way of a centre – Duah Kessie’s spot kick was well blocked but the Phoenix man was quickest to react to head the ball into the corner for what was the last action of the night as the referee brought the curtain down on an ideal boost to take into the Mead’s next game – away to the League leaders Lewes!

THE MEAD – Carey, Duyile (Green), McIntyre, Avery, Smith, Denny, Anidugbe, O’Connor, Pacquette (Vines), Parish (Adeniran), Mendy
Subs – McIntosh & Ovenden
