Wasps sting Mead to grab point

East Grinstead Town 3-3 The Mead

Another frustrating road trip for the Mead where they seemed to have three valuable points in their grasp only to succumb to a late home rally to deny the travellers the spoils.

For the second time in eighteen days, the Gaffer looked on in almost disbelief as a 3-1 away position early in the second period was eroded away as the home sides battled back for a point.

Ironically going into the game, neither side had won in their previous four games, but the Mead were up to the task straight from the off and were in front after just five minutes when Raphael Duyile danced his way down the right leaving his defender in his wake before delivering THE pinpoint cross to the back post, finding the head of Laurent Mendy who coolly headed home.

The home side were lucky not to go two down when keeper Smith pulled off a stunning save to deny Bode Anidugbe’s long-range effort. Raph also had a very good chance for the visitors, but when he found Smith off his line, he couldn’t keep his shot down and blazed over.

Very much against the run of play, the home side levelled on the half hour as the desperately unlucky Richard Avery powered home a header into his own net ironically enough from a corner which he himself had conceded with a brave defensive header just seconds before.
It was the kick start the Mead needed to get back on the front foot and were deservedly back in front before the break. A charging run forward from Joe Denny scrambled his way through the midfield and picked out Bode who time wasn’t denied as he drove his left-footed shot into the bottom right corner just before half-time.

The Mead should have put the game to bed at the start of the second half as a long ball down the inside left channel found Danny sprinting through who’s exquisite finish was made to look easy by the Mead’s young striker.

The visitors then had the chances to cement the win but were guilty of allowing the home side back into the game when the ball was slid home at the back post after the Mead back line was caught out.

Sadly, the warning wasn’t heeded and the home side grabbed what had seemed an unlikely equaliser at the start of the half five minutes from time and a two goal lead had been lost on the road for the second time in three games.

A frustrating afternoon, but a point away from home is a point gained – isn’t it?
