Mead frozen out as Robins go third

Carshalton Athletic 2-1 The Mead

The Mead's first defeat in seven games on quite comfortably the coldest afternoon of the season - all in all a disappointing - and freezing trip - for the Mead round the M25...

After struggling to cope with a slope and a gale force wind blowing straight down the slope, the Mead found themselves a goal down at the break to a questionable penalty yet somehow found themselves level just after half time when Laurent Mendy was able to loop the ball home from just a couple of yards out for his ninth goal of the campaign. Parity sadly didn't last long as Koroma was allowed a free header from a set piece to restore the home sides advantage, and whilst the Mead went looking for a second equaliser, clear cut chances just didn't come and the closest the visitors came to levelling the scores saw Tom O'Connor run out of pitch after being forced wide as he rounded the home keeper.

In truth the opening 20 minutes of the game saw Carshalton enjoy the benefits of kicking with the bitter winds at their back but without really forcing Lewis Carey into a save of note. Sadly that changes at the midway point when Harvey Brand was adjudged to have fouled in the box - a decision that incensed the Mead - before Koroma drove the spot kick low into the corner.

Mead's top scorer Paul Vines then had the visitors first chance of note as he guided a driven cross low to the corner forcing keeper Bishop into a good save, before Tom drove through before shooting just past the post. Carshalton almost doubled their lead just before the break when Cheadle drove too high as the Mead headed into the dressing room a goal behind.

Laurent then converted a good ball in from Harvey as the ball looped up and over Bishop and into the Carshalton net for an equaliser that really was a surprise to many. The home side restored their lead within five minutes when Koroma headed home his second of the afternoon, and it was if the home side were now happy to break down the slope as the Mead chased the game.

It was nearly 3-1 when Sogbanmu tested Lewis from the edge of the box, before at the other end came the Mead's great chance as Tom raced onto Bode Anidugbe's through ball, but just ran out of room as he rounded Bishop and the ball floated behind. Lewis then pulled off a terrific save to deny Cheadle's header with a terrific tip over before sub Richard Pacquette was agonisingly close to levelling the scores as his glancing header (from Laurent's cross) looped just over the home bar.

A bitterly cold afternoon when the warmth of the car heater was one of the highlights, but in hindsight, the Mead were just a bounce away from extending the unbeaten run - a run that now must start all over again!

THE MEAD - Carey, Brand, Danquah, Taiwo (Whitely), Avery, Denny, Green (Pacquette), Anidugbe, Vines, O'Connor, Mendy
Subs - Adelowo, Laker
