The best way to keep up to date with Thamesmead Town Football Club

Records tumble in Cup triumph

11 months ago By MIKE GREEN

A stunning Saturday in the Sussex sunshine!

Almost a year to the day when Thamesmead Town made FA Cup history by playing in the Emirates FA Cup's first ever tie played off the mainland when they travelled to Guernsey in the Preliminary Round, the Mead were at it again in this season's Preliminary Round in Saturday's tie away to East Preston.

The visitors 8-0 triumph was the biggest win of the round; the Club's best ever win in the FA Cup (beating the previous record of 4-1 achieved twice; against Chessington & Hook United in 2003's First Qualifying Round, and against Egham Town in the Extra Preliminary Round of 2006); and as far as our history books show, it was also the first time the club has ever won a game by eight goals - beating the previous best of 10-3 against Sporting Bengal United a decade ago.

Alex Teniola will take the goal-scoring plaudits by netting four, whilst substitute Paul Vines added two more in the last 20 minutes (including the eighth with the last kick of the game) with the others coming from Jake McIntyre's blockbuster and Tom O'Connor's rounding of the keeper.

Alex told the official website “Saturday was a great experience, being involved in an 8-0 win, that was my first! Even better to do it in the FA Cup; also very happy to make history with the club as well. Scoring four with half an hour to go was an amazing feeling. For me the most important thing was it helping me boost my confidence, as a striker, you always need to get going and hopefully keep a momentum, so to open my account for the season with four was brilliant. I’m buzzing for all the boys hopefully we carry on with great performances till the end of the season!”

A remarkable afternoon for the Mead that really does show the magic is still there in the Greatest Cup Competition in the World...
