Derby Day honours even

Teniola and Vines strikes not quite enough for Mead

It was honours even after an enjoyable contest at Bayliss Avenue.

Mead keeper Ollie Bowles kept the visitors out in the first half with two fine saves before VCD took the lead eight minutes after the break when Giacaicedo rolled the ball home but The Mead were responded brilliantly and were level within five minutes when Alex Teniola spectacularly fired home from the angle for his 11th of the season. Paul Vines then added his 22nd of the season as he converted Richard Sexias’ ball into the middle to put the home side in front before Giacaicendo grabbed his second to level things up, and although VCD possibly edged the final exchanges, the points were ultimately shared.

It was always going to be a close encounter with so many familiar face’s returning to Bayliss Avenue with VCD as the reverse fixture in December had been – its fortunate for the Mead’s second highest gate of the season that the weather was the exact opposite of that wet, cold afternoon as the early Spring conditions resulted in a balmy Saturday afternoon.

The opening was slow with the first chance falling to the visitors as Ollie pulled off a sensational save to keep out Guy’s header – in truth the VCD man should have scored which made the save even better! Ollie then bravely excelled to stop Thompson’s charging run as the former Mead man burst into the box – the Mead stopper standing his ground brilliantly to block the effort!
The home side’s best chance of the half came when VCD keeper Freund spilled Michael Ademiluyi’s free-kick but there wasn’t a green shirt on hand to force the ball home.

It took the visitors eight minutes into the second half as Giacaicedo was allowed too much time and space in the Mead box before showing great composure to round Ollie and roll the ball into the empty net.

The Mead’s response was as swift as it was spectacular as Alex raced onto a bouncing ball in the inside right position before unleashing a magnificent dipping drive that beat Freund at his near post. There will be some question marks against the keeper but credit the Mead striker too for the terrific strike. The goal lifted the Mead and just eight minutes later they had the lead. Richard did well to get the ball into Vinesy and the Mead number nine did what he’s done on 21 other occasions this season – found the net with some aplomb!

It wasn’t to be the double over VCD though sadly! Ollie pulled off his third great save of the afternoon to again deny Thompson before Giacaicedo took advantage of an advantage played by referee Butcher to score his second and tie the scores up and the visitors may even have taken all three points when substitute Sherwin Campbell’s late header grazed the top of the bar.

Honours even then and two hugely enjoyable games with VCD this season has seen the Mead net four points out of six…
