Avo's the last gasp hero!

The Mead 2-1 Herne Bay

The Mead’s walking wounded left it late, but Richard Avery’s late, late header secured three precious points against a Herne Bay side who showed that they would be contenders come the end of April.

With skipper Leon Smith suspended and striker Tashi Jay Kwayie recalled to his parent club Tonbridge Angels, the Gaffer tweaked his thread bare squad once again, and all must be hugely credited for the win.

Laurent Mendy benefited from a superb run from Warren Mfala who had only been signed earlier in the day as he slammed home the opener just before the break. The visitors levelled five minutes into the second half from possibly the move of the match when Emburey steered a header into the Mead’s net, and the game looked destined to finish level until Avo’s late heroics as he powered home a last-minute header to win the Mead’s third game in nine days.

Laurent could have put the home side in front in the opening quarter when he couldn’t keep down a prod at an early corner – perhaps it was just a “practice” for what was to follow?

The Mead created some decent first half chances – Paul Vines just couldn’t stretch to reach Jake McIntyre’s cross, and Warren was denied a debut goal by the keepers’ legs, before Bay keeper Hunter did brilliantly to deny Vinesy as the Mead’s number nine dwelled a fraction too long after Warren had done magnificently down the right.

The home side didn’t have it all their own was however as keeper Lewis Carey made a remarkable save to deny a pile-driver five minutes from the break. Whether or not it kick started the home side is questionable but within a minute, Laurent drilled the ball home from the edge of the box after being found by Warren.

The response from the visitors was a double half time change and within five minutes they were level, with Emburey stooping low to head home a great whipped ball in from the right.

The game then became as tight as anything that the Mead has been involved in all season as both sides looked to take the three points. The Mead backline just about stayed firm whilst at the other end, the chances were equally sparse, but they did come. Warren thought he’d scored his first goal for the club after a super run and through ball from Bode Anidugbe, and just as both sides looked to have settled for the draw, Avo was on hand to head the winner.

THE MEAD – Carey, Brand, McIntyre, Kinch (O’Connor), Avery, Denny, Mendy, Anidugbe, Vines, Mfala (Teniola), Ajala
Subs – McIntosh, Adeniran, Ovenden
