Honours even in Derby
Mead 2-2 VCD Athletic
An entertaining local derby ended even Stevens as The Mead Town and VCD Athletic shared four goals and the spoils on a bitterly cold night at Princes Park.
Despite taking the early lead through Danny Parish's 12th goal of the season only to be behind before half time. Bode Anidugbe was to be the Mead's hero as his seventh strike of the season got the home side level before substitute Laurent Mendy thought he'd won the game for the home side late on only to be "denied" by an assistant's flag!
In the early stages, the Mead looked very lively and might have scored in the opening minutes when Bode surged into the right side of the area but snatched his shot wide. Danny then crossed for Paul Vines and his miss-hit shot almost caught keeper Mant out but the VCD stopper recovered well to claw away. The Mead were forced into making a change after less than ten minutes when Ellis Green limped off to be replaced by Laurent.
That didn’t stunt the hosts, however, and five minutes later they went ahead. Vinesy sent Danny racing away and he rounded Mant to finish.
however, within four minutes, the Vickers were level. El-Moyhalbel threaded a pass to send Mfula free. The striker who had played one game for the Mead earlier in the season had the strength and speed to hold off Harvey Brand before racing away, going round Lewis Carey, and tucking it away. He almost had a second moments later as he broke through again but this time shot early and his fierce drive was well saved by Lewis. The visitors though were in front on the half hour as Cue hit a first time shot from twenty five yards that Lewis could only watch go in off the far post. Gordon burst through for VCD but flashed his shot just past the post then, at the other end, Danny got free but was forced wide by Baker to allow Mant to make a comfortable save. Mfula twisted and turned before firing another powerful shot that Lewis had to beat out but Thamesmead had the final chance of the half when Mant made a good save from Bode before pouncing on the loose ball as Danny closed in.
After the break, Harvey shot wide before Tom O’Connor pulled back to Danny whose shot was saved easily. Danny then turned provider to find Laurent but Mant made a great save and the Vickers’ goalkeeper was soon in action again when saving from Danny after he had got free.
El-Moyhalbel and Gorbell combined to find Mfula but he delayed his shot and Lewis was again able to save. Cue had a shot from distance saved before the Mead levelled. Some penalty area pinball ended when it came out to Bode and he finished - clinically!
Solomon Taiwo shot wide as the hosts looked to go ahead then Harvey went on a run before finding Tom whose shot flew across the face of the goal. El-Moyhalbel hit a low drive just wide for VCD before Bode had a shot beaten out by Mant at the expense of a corner. Mant then made an even better save when Tom met the delivery with a powerful header that Mant did well to turn over. Vinesy then had a shot blocked by Baker then Mant made an easy save from a Richard Avery long shot, before Laurent thought that he had put the Mead back in front from Danny’s pass but had "strayed offside" and it was disallowed. Tom shot wide from another Danny shot then Vinesy was crowded out by Gorbell as the Mead finished strongly. They could have ended with nothing, though, when Vickers substitute Jubrill showed great skill to break clear of his defender but Avo got back well to force him into hurrying his shot and Lewis was able to complete another fine save.
