TTFC 0-0 Gillingham
The Mead took another huge stride towards the opening of the new BOSTIK South East Division with a hugely creditable draw against a young Gillingham side mostly containing first and second years.
That said included in the Gillingham starting side were three players – Conor Wilkinson, Bradley Stevenson and Darren Oldaker – all of whom are likely to feature sooner rather than later in Steve Lovell’s SKYBet League One squad.
For the Mead, it was another good work-out. In the Green stripes for the first time, Matt Bodkin showed just why the Gaffer was pleased to secure his signature. With both Richard Pacquette and Leon Smith away on holiday, it was a chance for others to lay down their respective markers and to be fair given the increased quality of the opposition, every single player should be happy with the shift they put in.
The Mead had the best if the early pressure against the Gills side and the clearest early chance fell to Danny Parish who sent a looping header wide from Williams Danquah’s deep cross. The visitors responded before the break and twice Will Godmon denied Mbo – the second time being fifteen yards outside of his box!
The closest either side got to scoring came along in the first half’s final minutes. A touched on a free kick into the Gills box bounced in front of keeper Catherall before kissing the post allowing the grateful stopper to fall on the ball.
The Manager had this to say about The Meads performance so far:
"I've been delighted with our last two performances against two very good teams in Dartford and Gillingham. With 5 new players in the starting 11 against Dartford and 5 against Gillingham, we were really pleased with our shape and work rate in both games. If we keep progressing eh way we are, we will be right on schedule for our first league game on 11th August. We still have two good games and three training sessions to tidy up certain aspects of our game and also time to work on some new set pieces. I am really pleased with the squad and hope to bring in one or two more. On the whole, its been a positive preseason so far with every player's attitude being first class"
