Bad day at the office
Vinesy's volley not enough for the nine men!
THE MEAD 1-2 ROMFORD
Paul Vines' 21st goal of the season wasn't enough to earn the Mead the most unlikeliest of points on a frustrating afternoon at Bayliss Avenue.
After a disappointing first half, McKenzie put the visitors in front before Leon Smith received a second yellow card. Things got worse for the Mead when Ellis Green was shown a straight red after clashing with Bichard who then scored the visitors second shortly after. Vinesy' volley in stoppage time gave the Mead a glimmer of hope - hope that sadly came to nothing.
Going into the game, the Gaffer - without Bode Anidugbe, Tom O'Connor, Harvey Brand and Nathan Simpson for various reasons - handed a debut to Archie Johnson and a home debut to Kaka Dembele. Sadly for Kaka it was to only last 45 minutes as he hobbled off at the break along with Ellis Brown and didn't return.
The first half really didn't get going with both sides struggling with the wet, cold, gusty conditions that hit Bayliss Avenue on Saturday afternoon. Indeed it took until the last five minutes of the half for either side to have a shot of not - Archie vollied over the Mead after a Vinesy flick, whilst Ollie Bowles made a smart save to deny McKenzie.
The Romford number nine was though to have better luck after half time as he headed the visitors in front from close range before racing clear again only to be denied by a fabulous challenge by Laurent Mendy who had recovered brilliantly after McKenzie had initially got away from the Mead defender.
Just before the hour mark, Leon Smith was shown a second yellow sending the Mead down to ten men. Leon in some eye's was unfortunate as his "crime" second time around was connecting with the corner flag in frustration.
Worse was to follow as Ellis Green also received his marching orders - this time a straight red card - after a clash with Bichard on the half way line, although some believed that the Romford man should have gone too for his part in the altercation. And those people were even more incensed shortly after as Bichard scored the visitors second and what as to prove to be the winner.
Vinesy was in the right place at the right time in stoppage time to fire home, but the damage by then had well and truly been done.
Reflecting on the game, the Gaffer admitted, "I'm disappointed how flat we were this afternoon. I always thought that we could have got a point out of it despite the stewards enquiry that must go into their second goal after the part their guy played in the second sending off. But losing both Kaka and Ellis Brown with injuries at half time I think really summed up our day!"
