Derby day defeat for the Mead

Mead beaten at Oakwood

The Mead were beaten on Bank Holiday Monday as chances were missed for possibly the first time this season, as VCD showed the visitors how it was done on another scorchingly hot match-day.

Buoyed by Saturday's 5-0 drubbing of Horsham, the visitors stared brightly and from an early corner VCD keeper Mant made a great save to deny Scott Kinch's header. Bode Anidugbe then raced onto a great ball from Ellis Green and forced Mant into a second fine save before the Mead's best chance of the half fell to Dane Luchford. The striker got on the end of a long goal kick from Lewis Carey and seemed to have beaten Mant only for Imudia to pull off an amazing goal-line clearance to deny the striker his first League goal for the club.

The worry was that the Mead would suffer for those missed chances and so it sadly proved on the half hour when Darboe was allowed too much space on the edge of the box as the defence waited for a flag that didn't come before thumping the ball beyond Lewis' desperate dive. VCD then took full control of the game on the stroke of half-time when again the Mead defence failed to clear and as the ball came into the box, Carvell steered the ball into the bottom corner of the net.

Ten minutes after the break, the Mead grabbed a lifeline as Alex Teniola raced onto a superb through ball and gave Mant no chance from the edge of the box. Sadly that was a close as the visitors got as Darboe took advantage of some hesitation in the Mead back-line as a long ball was thumped forward and was able to steer a looping header over a stranded Lewis and into the net.

The Mead thought that they'd got a second lifeline when Laurent Mendy appeared to be thrown to the ground in the home box - referee Simpson though waved away the protests and effectively with it the Mead hopes. VCD indeed could have increased their victory margin as Lawson struck the top of the Mead bar before Lewis produced a truly magnificent save to keep out sub Gorbell's thumping header. The former Mead defender thought he'd scored on his return from injury but Lewis somehow got enough on the ball to divert it onto the bar and as the ball bounced down, it was hacked clear.

Plenty then to ponder before the Mead's Emirates FA Cup tie with Lewes at the weekend...

THE MEAD - Carey, Brand, McIntyre, Kinch, Smith, Mendy (Flack), Green, O'Connor, Teniola, Luchford (Vines), Anidugbe
Subs - Denny, Glover, Ovenden
